Extend All to Column ( Modeling )

Tool summary :

  • Extends to a selected column any members (except columns) located within a specified distance from that column in the 3D model.
  • This tool can also trim members that extend through the column's X or Y axes within the specified distance. Extended members then undergo Process and Create Solids , which, if possible, attempts to design system connections for them.

Extend All to Column extends the end of any member whose end lies within the " Distance... " from the selected column. In this example, the end of beam B_45 will be extended to meet the column since it lies within the 1'-0" X axis distance from the column's center. But B_47 is more than 1'-0" from the center of the column and, therefore, will not be extended.
  • The Extend All to Column tool can be found in Modeling in the " Command group " called ' Toolbox ' in Toolbar Configuration (classic) or in the Ribbon Editor (lightning). It is available at no additional cost to SDS2 software users whose support accounts are current. For more information, contact your SDS2 sales representative.
  • See the step-by-step instructions .

Step-by-step instructions to extend members to a column :

The following instructions assume that you are using a 3-button mouse. You must do either step 2 (preselection) or step 4 (in-tool selection) to perform this operation.

1 . Before using this tool, ensure that the members that you want to extend (or shorten) and extend to (or shorten to) are visible. For example, turn off depth checking if necessary.

2 (optional) . Preselect the column that you want to other members to extend to or shorten to.

3 . Invoke Extend All to Column using one (1) of the following methods:

Method 1 : Use a keyboard shortcut (if one has been set up).

Method 2 : Click the Extend All to Column icon. The icon can be taken from the group named ' Toolbox ' and placed on a toolbar (classic) or the ribbon (lightning).

4 . Skip this step if you already selected a column step 2.

Select Item(s) bindings

4a (if you didn't do step 2) : Extend All to Column activates Select Item(s) mouse bindings, and the status line prompts you to select one or more members to extend to (or shorten to). Optionally hold down Shift to select additional members. Press the Enter key or right-click ( Menu ) and choose " OK " on the context menu when you are done selecting.

5 . The Extend All to Column window opens.

5a (optional) : In the " Distance from column " field, enter the maximum distance (in the primary dimension " Units " or other units ) from the column of member ends that you want to extend or shorten to the column. Note that this setting alone determines which members will be extended -- you will not be prompted to select them manually with this tool.

5b : Press the " OK " button to accept the value in the " Distance from column " field.

5c : Press the " Reset " button to clear the value in the " Distance from column " field; that is, reset it to the last value used.

5d : Press the " Cancel " button to exit the command. No members will be extended.

6 . A progress bar illustrates the progress as members are processed. The members whose ends lie within in the radius entered in step 5 will be extended or trimmed, if possible.

6a : When the progress bar reaches 100%, the progress bar window will close automatically if the box is checked ( ) for " Close when done ." If the window does not close automatically, you can close it by checking that same box or by pressing the " OK " button.

7 . Once the members have been processed, a dialog will ask you whether you want to keep the changes.

7a : Press the " Yes " button to accept the changes.

7b : Press the " No " button to undo the changes, then repeat step 6.
