Round bar (topic)

Beginning in SDS2 v2016, when vertical brace rod bracing was implemented as a system-designed connection, round bar was added to the local shape file . A round bar must exist in the local shape file in order for you to add it to your current Job.

Shape file specifications ( diameter and section size ):

VIDEO Round bars are copied from the conf_mtrl /usa_shape file to the local shape file. (Recorded in SDS2 Detailing , v2016.)
  • Round bar is a solid steel material with a cross section that is round. " Section size " and " Rod diameter " are the two fields that are maintained in a shape file for round bar.
  • When the user enters a round bar section size, that section size sets the " Rod diameter " of the round bar.
  • A round bar section size can be any string of characters. The usual convention is to designate round bar as follows: " Round bar" prefix + diameter (example: RB3/8 for round bar that is 3/8 inch thick).
  • A round bar must exist in the local shape file in order for you to add it to your current Job .

Adding round bar to the model :

  • To add round bar to a member as a submaterial (pre-selection method) : Select the one (1) member that you want to add the material to (so that it is displayed in the " Primary selection color ") > press F3 > filter for " Plate / Bar " > double-click " Round Bar " > locate two material work points > enter a " Section size " on the Round Bar Material window > rotate the material into place > locate a material dimension reference point > right-click ( Return ) if done adding material to the member > Change All Options can be applied if the material is being added to a member that is batched together with other members that have the same member piecemark.
  • To add a round bar as a miscellaneous member: Press F2 > filter for " Miscellaneous steel " > double-click " Round Bar " > locate two member work points > enter a " Section size " on the Round Bar Edit window > right-click ( Return ) if you are done adding duplicates or variations of the miscellaneous member.
  • To add a round bar as a legacy miscellaneous member, click here for instructions.
  • Locating work points for a round bar that is added as material or a legacy miscellaneous member should be done in a view whose work plane is orthogonal to (at right angles to) the material being added. A round bar miscellaneous member , on the other hand, can be added and properly rotated into place even in an isometric view.
  • Round bar can can be entered as a vertical brace " Section size " to instruct connection design to create rod bracing .

  • Steel grades that are available for round bar material are set up using Home > Project Settings > Job > Round and Square Bar Grades .
