Add Clevis Element ( Modeling )

Tool summary :

  • Adds a clevis to the member that you preselect before activating this tool. If you do not preselect, you are required to select a member after Add Clevis begins.
  • The clevis element becomes a submaterial of the member that you select to add it to. The clevis will be shown on that member's detail drawing and will be listed in that member's bill of material. The part is shown on the detail and in the BOM even if you do not shop bolt or shop weld the clevis to the member. Also, the clevis does not have to touch the member to be a part of the member.
  • This page also discusses how to add a clevis as a legacy miscellaneous member, which is a similar operation that is launched with a different tool. Adding a clevis as a non-legacy miscellaneous member is discussed on a different page .
  • When adding clevis material, you must add a clevis " Section size " on the Clevis Material window. In order to add such a " Section size ," clevis material must reside in your local shape file . The Shapes Properties or the Copy Shapes utility can be used to add clevis material to the local shape file.

Adding a clevis material or legacy miscellaneous member :

A rod brace constructed with two clevises, a turnbuckle, plates and round bars. You can add rod bracing similar to this by entering a round bar description as the " Section size " on the Vertical Brace window.

To add a clevis to a member as a submaterial (pre-selection method):

  • In Modeling , preselect the member you want to add the clevis to > press F3 > select " Other " > double-click " Clevis " > locate material work points > enter a clevis " Section size " on the Clevis Material window > rotate the material into place > right-click ( Return ) if done adding material to the member > Change All Options options can be applied when applicable.
  • Instead of using F3, you can activate the Add Clevis tool by clicking the icon represented at the top of this page or by using a keyboard shortcut or by using the classic menu system or etc.

To add a clevis as a legacy miscellaneous member, confirm that the box is checked for User and Site Options > Site > " Show legacy miscellaneous members in member add screen ." Then, in Modeling , press F2 > check the box for " Miscellaneous steel " > select " Miscellaneous -- Clevis " > locate member work points > enter a clevis " Section size " > rotate the legacy miscellaneous member into place > right-click ( Return ) when you are done.

Tip 1: Point 1 of the clevis defines the center of the " Pin hole diameter " as well as the material origin reference point.

Tip 2: Point 1 and point 2 together define the axis around which the " Rod hole diameter " is centered. The length of the clevis is defined per the local shape file specifications for the selected " Section size ."

Tip 3: Be sure that you define your selections on the Clevis Material window per the " Section size " that you select. For example, you don't want to set a " Pin diameter " that is greater than the " Maximum pin [hole] diameter " in the local shape file.
