Symbol Edit ( Drawing Editor )

Tool summary :

  • Lets you edit one or multiple symbols that you select. Selection filtering is built in.
  • All symbols that you select must be on comment layers and have the same name in order for you to be able to edit them on the X Edit window (where X is the symbol's name). Otherwise, the window that opens will be the Edit Symbol window.
  • The preferred way to edit a single symbol is to double-click it while ' Default ' is selected as the selection filter. Again, the symbol must be on a comment layer in order for it to be editable.
  • If you preselect multiple types of objects, Symbol Edit will edit only those objects that are symbols. The other objects will remain selected. Click here for an example. Preselection is done in Select Items mode. Here are the steps:

    Select Items bindings (for preselection)

    1. Draw an area box or hold down the Shift key and left-click ( Select+ ) several objects of the same type or of different types.
    2. Invoke Symbol Edit .
    3. The Edit Symbol window opens. It will be read-only if any symbols in your selection were on non-comment layers.
  • In-tool selection takes place when you invoke Symbol Edit with nothing selected or with object types other than symbols selected. The tool brings up Select Item(s) mouse bindings, and the status line prompts you select symbols. Here are the steps:

    1. Invoke Symbol Edit .

Select Item(s) bindings (for in-tool selection)
    2. Select one or more objects. Built-in selection filtering restricts you to selecting symbols. Press the Enter key when you are done selecting the objects.
    3. The Edit Symbol window opens. It will be read-only if any symbols in your selection were on non-comment layers.
