Add Extension Dimension

Draws single leg dimensions that measure the distance to a workpoint on the drawing.

1. Click the Add Extension Dimension icon, which is pictured above. The icon can be found on the Drafting page > Annotations section.

Alternative: Invoke Add Extension Dimension using the Find Tool by searching the command name and clicking the icon, which is pictured above.

2. The status line prompts "Locate extension dimension point", the Locate-Remove-Return mouse bindings become active, and the Locate contextual page becomes active. Left-click (Locate) one or more extension dimensions. Each time you left-click, an X appears to mark the base point of the dimension leg.

Alternative 1: If your drawing has more than one workpoint, the status line prompts you to Locate workpoint for extension dimensions. Select one workpoint and continue with step 2.

Alternative 2: Right-click (Return) to exit the command without adding any extension dimensions.

Tip: At any time while this command is active, you can check or uncheck Show tails in the Palette section on the Locate contextual page.

3. Right-click (Enter) when you are finished locating the dimensions. The status line prompts "Locate extension dimension line". The extension dimension objects are temporarily displayed and move up or down as you move your mouse cursor.

Alternative 1: After you locate the first dimension point in step 2, the status line changes to "Locate extension dimension point or line". Hold down Shift to modify the left-click mouse binding to Locate line. A preview of the extension dimension object(s) is displayed. Move the mouse cursor up or down to set the desired vertical position of the dimension(s), then left-click (Locate line) to add the extension dimension(s) and repeat step 2.

Alternative 2: Middle-click (Remove) to undo the last extension dimension you located.

4. Drag your mouse cursor up or down to set the desired vertical position of the dimension line, then left-click (Locate line) to add the extension dimension(s) and end the command.

Alternative: Right-click (Return) to exit the command without adding any extension dimensions.

  • Unshorten the drawing if it has been shortened. Adding an extension dimension to a shortened view could result in an inaccurate measurement.
  • On drawings that do not have a workpoint, the extension dimension is measured from the drawing's 0,0 XY coordinate (see X-Y-Z display).
  • On standard details, the extension dimension is measured from the reference point.
  • You can add workpoints to drawings using Workpoint Add.
  • For a material that is sloping, you may need to edit the workpoint and set its Rotation so that the legs of the extension dimensions associated with that workpoint are drawn perpendicular to the slope of the material.
  • The extension dimension can measure the distance to a different workpoint by changing the Workpoint ID on the Edit Dimension window.
  • Extension dimensions can also be added using Dimension Add.
