" Inner Flange Plate " & " Upper Inner Flange Fill Plate " & " Lower Inner Flange Fill Plate "

Documentation in progress.

Column inner flange plates are designed per " Inner Flange Plate " locks. The same locks control the inner splice plates on both flanges. Plates shop bolt to the lower column, field bolt to the upper.

(W column, splice plate connection, to a W column)
(" Section size " for both columns = W or welded plate W or other material with flanges)
( Use inner flange plates = (applies when " Column attachment " = ' Automatic ))
(" Input connection type " = ' Splice plate ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined ')
(" Column attachment " = ' Yes ' or ' Automatic ')
(" Inner flange plate " = ' All-Bolted plates ')
(" Butt plate " = ) (" Web plates "= or )
" Inner Flange Plate "

A fill plate may automatically be generated in the model if the two columns being spliced have unequal flange thicknesses. If the column flanges are equally thick, no fill plates will initially be generated in the model, but " Upper Inner Flange Fill Plate " and " Lower Inner Flange Fill Plate " connection design locks will still be provided, with their values set to zero (' 0 '). Entering a " Plate thickness " greater than ' 0 ' will result in a fill plate of that thickness being generated.

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in a user defined connection file will automatically be locked on a member edit window for which that file is the " Input connection type ." You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Column Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :

Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ).

(column splice connection)

Hole patterns and spacings are controlled by the " Outer Flange Plate " locks: The hole pattern in the outer flange plate sets the hole pattern in the inner flange plates. For example, the " Vertical spacing " of the shop bolts on the lower column for an outer flange plate sets the vertical hole spacing on the lower half of an inner flange plate. If a lower fill plate is generated, that vertical spacing sets the hole pattern in the fill plate as well.

Inner flange plate

Plate width ( width ): The length of the top or bottom edge of the inner flange plates (see example ). If the column is perfectly vertical, " Plate width " is the horizontal distance between the two vertical edges of such plates.

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the inner flange plates. This applies to the inner plates on both flanges and on either side of the web.

Offset from member centerline ( width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work lines of the columns) from the column web centerline to the nearest edge of the inner flange plates (see example ).

  Upper Inner Flange Fill Plate

Upper inner flange fill plate

Length ( upper length ): The distance (parallel to the work lines of the columns) between the top or bottom edges of the upper inner flange fill plates (see example ). Changing the " Upper flange fill length " moves the top edges of the upper fill plates while the bottom edges of the plates remains fixed.

Plate width ( upper width ): The length of the top or bottom edge of the upper inner flange fill pates (see example ).

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the upper inner flange fill plates. This applies to the such plates on both flanges and on either side of the web.

Offset from member centerline ( upper offset ): The distance (perpendicular to the work lines of the columns) from the column web centerline to the nearest edge of the upper inner flange fill plates (see example ).

  Lower Inner Flange Fill Plate
(for splicing a less deep top column to a bottom column)

Lower Inner flange fill plate

Length ( lower length ): The distance (parallel to the work lines of the columns) between the top or bottom edges of the lower inner flange fill plates (see example ). If the column is perfectly vertical, " Length " is the vertical distance between those edges. Changing the " Lower flange fill length " moves the bottom edges of the lower fill plates while the bottom edges of the plate remains fixed.

Plate width ( lower width ): The length of the top or bottom edge of the lower inner flange fill pates (see example ).

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the lower inner flange fill plates. This applies to the such plates on both flanges and on either side of the web. If the upper flange fill " Plate thickness " is unlocked ( ), entering a thickness greater than ' 0 ' here also adds that thickness to the upper fill plate or -- if there is not already such a plate -- results in an upper fill plate of that thickness being generated.

Offset from member centerline ( lower offset ): The distance (perpendicular to the work lines of the columns) from the column web centerline to the nearest edge of the lower inner flange fill plates (see example ).
