" Gusset One Member " & " Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Plate " & " Weld Conn2 "

NS and FS gusset plates field bolt to the left and right flanges of a web-horizontal wide flange vertical brace and are designed per " Gusset One Member " and " Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Flange Plate " locks when ' Flange gussets ' is the " Connection arrangement ." The near-side flange gusset is shown in this example. The two gusset plates shop attach to the beam per choices made to " Weld Conn2 " or, when applicable, " NS/FS Clip Conn2 " locks.

The NS & FS flange gusset plates shop weld or shop bolt to the beam depending on the choice made to " Gusset to supporting member " the " Connection specifications " on the Vertical Brace Edit window. That choice also determines whether you get " Weld Conn2 " locks or " NS/FS Clip Conn2 " locks.

The brace-to-gusset connection consists of a hole pattern for field bolting each brace's flange to a flange gusset.

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Gusset plate dimensions and location

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): This sets the thickness for both the near-side and the far-side flange gusset and is The " Material thickness " of the rectangular plate flange gusset material.

Width ( plate width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) from the framing edge of the gusset plate (the edge that welds to the beam) to the farthest point on the same surface that is opposite to the framing edge of the flange gusset. See the example .

Length ( plate length ): The length of the framing edge of the gusset plate (which welds to the supporting beam). See the example . The flange gusset " Length " is measured parallel with the work line of the supporting beam.

Refx: The positive (+) or negative (-) distance (parallel with the supporting beam's work line ) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the corner of the framing edge of the flange gusset that this end of the vertical brace points toward (see example ). For flange gussets to a non-sloping beam, this distance is horizontal. A " Refx " of ' 0 ' aligns the corner of the flange gusset with the work point and perpendicular to the beam's work line. Entering a positive (+) distance moves the flange gusset parallel with the beam's work line toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. Entering a negative (-) distance moves the corner of the flange gusset parallel with the beam's work line in the direction that this end of the vertical brace points toward. Changing the " Refx " moves the plate, but not the holes on the plate.

Refy: The positive (+) or negative (-) distance (perpendicular to the supporting beam's work line ) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the framing edge of the flange gusset (which welds to the beam's bottom flange -- see example ). For a flange gusset to a non-sloping beam, this distance is vertical. A " Refy " of ' 0 ' aligns the framing edge of the flange gusset with the work point and parallel to the beam's work line. Entering a positive (+) distance moves the flange gusset perpendicular to the beam's work line toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. Entering a negative (-) distance moves the flange gusset perpendicular to the beam's work line in the direction that this end of the vertical brace points toward. Changing the " Refy " moves the plate, but does not move the holes on the plate.

Connection cut width ( cut width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of the connection edge of the gusset plate. The connection edge is the edge that the web-horizontal wide flange brace frames to (see example ). This distance is not the actual width of the connection edge, but the width of that edge as measured parallel with the depth of the beam.

Connection cut length ( cut length ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of the connection edge of the gusset plate. The connection edge is the edge that the web-horizontal wide flange brace frames to (see example ). This distance is not the actual length of the connection edge, but the length of that edge as measured parallel with the framing edge of the gusset plate -- that is, as measured parallel with the beam.

Acute side clip cut width ( acute side cut width ): The distance (measured perpendicular to the work line of the beam) between the two corners of the clip cut that is included in the acute angle at the intersection of the brace to the beam. As the example shows, the gusset plate is divided into an acute side and an obtuse side by the work line of the brace. The acute side of the gusset plate is the side contained by the acute angle between the brace and the beam.

Acute side clip cut length ( acute side cut length ): The distance (measured parallel with the work line of the beam) between the two corners of the clip cut that is included in the acute angle at the intersection of the brace to the beam. As the example shows, the gusset plate is divided into an acute side and an obtuse side by the work line of the brace. The acute side of the gusset plate is the side contained by the acute angle between the brace and the beam.

Obtuse side clip cut width ( obtuse cut width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of clip cut made to the obtuse side of the gusset plate. The obtuse side of the gusset plate is the side contained by the obtuse angle between the beam and the brace. See the example .

Obtuse side clip cut length ( obtuse cut length ): The distance (parallel to the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of the clip cut made to the obtuse side of the gusset plate. The obtuse side of the gusset plate is the side contained by the obtuse angle between the beam and the brace. See the example .

Flat width ( flat ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) that is the width of the cut that is made to the corner of the gusset plate that the work line of the brace points toward. In the example above, the " Flat width " cut is made to the corner of the gusset plate that is closest to the brace's work point.

End distance ( end dist ): The distance (parallel with the framing edge of the gusset plate, which welds to supporting beam in the example ) from the point where the work line of the brace intersects the framing edge of the gusset plate to the corner of the framing edge that this end of the web-horizontal wide flange brace points toward.

Length acute side ( acute side ): The distance (parallel to the work line of the supporting beam) from acute-side corner of the framing edge of the gusset plate to the work line of the brace. The framing edge has two corners. The acute-side corner is the corner of the framing edge that is interior to the acute angle formed by the work line of the brace to the work line of the beam (see example ).

Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Flange Plate
( web-horizontal wide flange vertical brace, flange gussets, to a beam )

Hole pattern for field bolting the wide flange brace flanges to the flange gusset plates

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the near-side and far-side flange gussets.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the web-horizontal wide flange brace to the near-side and far-side flange gussets.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on the near-side flange gusset. The number of " Rows " entered here will also be applied to the far-side flange gusset. Bolt row spacing on a web-horizontal wide flange brace flange gusset runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. For the brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 3 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the flange gusset (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the flange gusset (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): The distance from the forward edge of the web-horizontal wide flange vertical brace's flange to the nearest hole in that brace's flange. See the example . The forward edge of the brace's flange is the edge that is closest to the work point of the vertical brace. Holes in the brace's flange are for field bolting to the flange gusset plates. This edge distance applies to both flanges of the brace.

Other edge distance along brace ( other edge dist ): The distance from the connection edge of the flange gusset plate to the nearest hole for field bolting that flange gusset plate to the flange of the web-horizontal wide flange vertical brace. See the example . This one edge distance applies to both flange gusset plates.

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the flange gusset (see example ). These holes will be used for field bolting the flange of the brace to the gusset. Columns of holes run perpendicular to the work line of the web-horizontal wide flange brace. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( perp ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes. In the example above, this distance would be half the " Hole spacing perpendicular to brace " since the work line of the brace is centered between the two columns of holes.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( column spacing ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the web-horizontal wide flange brace.

  Weld Conn2
( web-horizontal wide flange vertical brace, flange gussets, to a beam )

Shop weld, gusset plate to the supporting beam

Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the gusset plate to the supporting beam. See the example . The gusset can optionally be shop bolted to the supporting beam with a clip angle (" NS/FS Clip Conn2 "). Regardless of whether the gusset is welded or bolted, the gusset is detailed with the supporting beam and field bolts to the vertical brace.

To get a weld (" Weld Conn2 "), select ' Welded ' for " Gusset to supporting member " under " Connection specifications " on the Vertical Brace Edit window.

To instead get a clip angle (" NS/FS Clip Conn2 "), select ' Clip Angle ' for " Gusset to supporting member ."

A special case : If the supporting beam has a narrow flange and ' Welded ' is selected for " Gusset to supporting member ," the flange gussets may shop weld to the supporting beam's flange with clip angles.
