Component Selection Tool ( Modeling )

Tool summary :

  • Finds custom components of a specified type and selects them or their members in the model.
  • Choices made on the Component Selection window control the component type, the method of selection, and whether or not the results are automatically edited.

  • To use this tool, you must be in Modeling . You should Open ( Ctrl + o ) a view wherein the custom components you are looking for are likely to be visible. If there are custom components outside of that view, the tool will still be able to find those custom components, but you will see no visual indication that it has found them. It does not matter if members are shown in stick or a solid form. The Component Selection Tool will turn stick members with searched-for custom components to solid opaque if you select ' Component ' for " Component selection ."
  • The Component Selection Tool icon can be found in the group called ' Model ' (lighting or classic). The command can also be configured to be invoked using a keyboard shortcut, the context menu, or a mode. For the lightning interface, this configuration is done using Customize Interface .

   The Component Selection window :

This window lets you specify the component type, and the method of selection, and if you want to edit the results.

Available components: The custom component type you want to search for. All custom components that are available to be added using Add Component can be searched for. If you select a custom component that does not exist in the model, then after you press " OK " you will be notified that " No components were selected ."

Component selection: Member or Component .

' Member ' instructs the Component Selection Tool to select (or edit) all members with the custom component that is selected for " Available components ."

' Component ' instructs the Component Selection Tool to select (or edit) custom components that are of the type selected for " Available components ." Stick members with searched-for custom components will be turned solid opaque .

If this box is checked ( ), the member edit window (or custom component window) for the searched-for custom components will open automatically after you press " OK ."

If the box is not checked ( ), the items (members or custom components) will be selected in the model. You can double-click one of the selected items if you want to open that item's edit window. Or you can right-click and choose " Edit " on the menu if you want to do a multi-edit of all the selected items.

   

"OK" uses the choices made on this window to conduct a search for custom components in the model, with one of the following possible results:

Possible result 1 : If at least one custom component of the type selected for " Available components " is found in the model and " Component selection " was set to ' Component ', any stick members with the custom component(s) that are found will be turned solid opaque and those custom component(s) will, if possible, be highlighted to show that they are selected. If the box for " Edit selection results " was checked, the custom component edit window will open. The custom component edit window will be a multi-edit window if multiple custom components of the selected " Available components " type exist in the model. You will be notified if multiple custom components were selected but multi-edit capabilities are not available for that custom component type.

Possible result 2 : If at least one custom component of the type selected for " Available components " is found in the model and " Component selection " was set to ' Member ', then the member(s) with the custom component(s) will be selected. If the box for " Edit selection results " was checked, the member edit window will open. On that member edit window, you will find a leaf that contains the settings for the custom component(s). The member edit window will be a multi-edit window if multiple custom components of the selected " Available components " type exist in the model.

Possible result 3 : If no custom components of the type selected for " Available components " are found in the model, then after you press " OK " you will be notified that " No components were selected ."

"Cancel" closes this window without applying any of the choices made to it.

"Reset" undoes all changes made to this window since you first opened it. The window remains open.
