" Stiffener Plate " connection design locks

" Stiffener Plate " locks set the design of web stiffeners in the supporting column for a vertical brace or 2- or 3-point braces.
  • Slight gaps are maintained between the stiffeners and the gusset plate and the column flanges.

(seismic or non-seismic vertical brace to a column web)
(vertical brace " Input connection type " = ' Vbrc plate ' or ' User defined ')
(" Seismic brace " = ' Yes ' or ' Automatic ')
(for non-seismic bracing: " Check supporting for web stress ")

" Stiffener Plate "

Availability : The " Stiffener Plate " connection design locks become available when a vertical brace or 2- or 3-point braces frame to a column web. If the locks are populated with null values, entering a " Plate thickness " instructs connection design to attempt to create column web stiffeners on both sides of the vertical brace gusset plate.

Automatic design of column web stiffener plates can take place without your having to set any connection design locks if the column has a thin web and the brace is seismic or the check for the supporting member's web stress is turned on in the vertical brace's " Connection specifications ."
Related locks :

Web Doublers (2-point seismic & non-sesmic vertical braces)

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in a user defined connection file will automatically be locked on a member edit window for which that file is the " Input connection type ." You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Beam Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :

  Stiffener Plate

Both stiffener plates

Plate width: The distance (parallel with the depth of the column) between the two edges of the stiffener plate that are parallel with the web of the column. Both stiffener plates are this same " Plate width ."

Plate thickness: The " Material thickness " of the column web stiffener. See the example .

Fixed end clips/copes

When the column rotation is 90 degrees, the " NS or top ... " locks apply to the top stiffener.

Ns or top length ( cut length ): The distance that the fixed end copes or clips to the NS (or top) stiffener are to be cut lengthwise -- that is, parallel with the column web, perpendicular to the vertical brace's length dimension. See the example and also click here .

Ns or top depth ( cut depth ): The distance that the fixed end copes or clips to the NS (or top) stiffener are to be cut depthwise -- that is, parallel with the plate width, which is parallel with the column depth, which is parallel with the column flange width dimension, which is parallel with the brace's length dimension. See the example and also click here .

Ns or top cut operation ( cut operation ): ' Clip ' or ' Cope '. See the example and also click here .

' Clip ' results in an angular cuts at the corners of the fixed end of the stiffener. The fixed end is the end that frames to the web of the column.

' Cope ' results in L-shaped cuts with a corner radius. The two cuts are at the corners of the fixed end of the stiffener.

Fs or bottom length ( cut length ): Same as " NS or top length ," except that this applies to the FS or bottom stiffener.

Fs or bottom depth ( cut depth ): Same as " NS or top depth ," except that this applies to the FS or bottom stiffener.

Fs or bottom cut operation ( cut operation ): Same as " NS or top cut operation ," except that this applies to the FS or bottom stiffener.

Welds

Weld to supporting web size ( web ): The weld size for shop welding the width edge of the stiffener plate to the flange of the column.

Weld to supporting flange size ( flange ): The weld size for shop welding the fixed edge of the stiffener plate to the web of the column.
