" Brace Connection To Gusset Wtee " connection design locks

NS and FS web plates shop bolt to a stem-vertical W tee vertical brace and field bolt to its gusset plate per " Brace Connection To Gusset Wtee " locks. The gusset shop welds (or shop bolts with a clip angle) to a beam. The W tee brace may be stem ' Down ' (shown) or stem ' Up ' (not shown).

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Web plates ( NS and FS )

Length ( plate length ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) between the two edges of the near side web connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Width ( plate width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) between the two edges of the near side web connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the near side web connection plate. This also sets the thickness of the far side connection plate.

Refx ( plate refx ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the nearest edge of the near side web connection plate (see example ). This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the work line to the edge of the near side web connection plate that is closest to and parallel with the flange of the stem-vertical tee brace (see example ). This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Web plate to gusset connection ( field bolted )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the web connection plate to the gusset plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the web connection plate to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes used to fasten the web plate to the vertical brace gusset plate (see example ). Bolt row spacing on a vertical brace gusset plate runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. For the stem-vertical tee brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the gusset connection side of the web plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the gusset connection side of the web plate (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): The distance from the forward edge of the web plate to the nearest hole on the web plate. This distance is measured along the work line of the web-vertical W tee vertical brace. The forward edge of the web plate is the plate's width edge that is nearest to the work point of the brace.

Other edge distance along brace ( other edge dist ): The distance from the connection edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for field bolting the web plate to the gusset. This distance is measured along the work line of the web-vertical W tee vertical brace.

Columns: The number of columns of holes used to field bolt the web plate to the gusset plate (see example ). In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes in the web plate to gusset connection. In the example above, this distance would be ' 0 ' (zero) since the nearest column of holes is centered over the work line of the brace.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( column spacing ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( hed ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the web plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the web plate to the gusset plate. See the example .

Bolt row spacing on a vertical brace gusset plate runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. For the stem-vertical tee brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the brace connection side of the web plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the brace connection side of the web plate (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): The distance from the edge of the web plate to the nearest hole in the web plate for shop bolting the brace to the web plate (see example ). The edge of the web plate that is referred to here is perpendicular to the work line of the brace and is that plate's width edge that rests on the stem of the W tee.

Other edge distance along brace ( other ): The distance from the forward edge of the stem-vertical W tee brace to the nearest hole in the stem of the W tee for shop bolting the web plate to the W tee brace (see example ). The forward edge of the W tee brace is the edge of the brace's stem (web) that is closest to the work point of the brace. The edge runs perpendicular to the work line of the brace.

Columns: The number of columns of holes used to shop bolt the web plate to the web-vertical tee brace (see example ). In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes in the web plate to brace connection.

Horizontal edge distance ( brc hed ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the web plate to the nearest column of holes for shop bolting the web plate to the web-vertical W tee brace. See the example .

Near-side and far-side fill plates will be placed between the brace web and the web plate as shown in the example above. Select ' On gusset plate ' if the web of the stem-vertical W tee brace is thicker than the gusset plate -- a situation that is not shown in the example above.

Width ( fill width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) between the two edges of the near side fill plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. This distance also applies to the far side fill plate.
