" Brace Connection To Gusset Wtee " connection design locks

NS and FS web plates field bolt a stem-vertical W tee vertical brace to a shared gusset plate per " Brace Connection To Gusset Wtee " locks. The gusset plate shop attaches to a beam. The web plates shop bolt to the W tee brace, which may be stem ' Down ' (shown) or stem ' Up ' (not shown).

( web plate to gusset connection , field bolted)

( web plate to brace connection , shop bolted)

The NS and FS web plates shop bolt to the stem-vertical W tee brace and field bolt to the gusset plate. NS and FS fill plates are generated in the model if they are needed; that is, if the thicknesses of the gusset plate and the W tee web are unequal.. If the thicknesses of the W tee web and the gusset plate are the same, then no fill plates are needed, and the connection design locks for those fill plates will, by default, be populated with null values (distance entries of ' 0 ').

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Web plates ( NS and FS )

Length ( plate length ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) between the two edges of the near side web connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here also applies to the far side connection plate.

Width (pl width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) between the two edges of the near side web connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here also applies to the far side connection plate.

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the near-side web plate. This also sets the thickness of the far-side web plate.

Refx ( plate refx ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the nearest edge of the near side web connection plate (see example ). This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the work line to the edge of the near side web connection plate that is closest to and parallel with the top flange of the stem-vertical tee brace. This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the gusset plate and the web plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, determine the diameter of holes for field bolting the stem-vertical tee brace web plate to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on the vertical brace gusset plate -- see example ). For the stem-vertical tee brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " on the gusset plate is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the gusset plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( sp ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the gusset plate (see example ). Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( ed ): The distance from the forward edge of the web plate to the nearest hole on the web plate. This distance is measured along the work line of the web-vertical W tee vertical brace. The forward edge of the web plate is the plate's width edge that is nearest to the work point of the brace.

Other edge distance along brace ( oed ): The distance from the connection edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for field bolting the web plate to the gusset. This distance is measured along the work line of the web-vertical W tee vertical brace.

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the gusset plate (see example ). These holes are for field bolting the stem-vertical tee brace connection plate to the gusset. Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. In the example above, the number of " Columns " in the gusset connection half of the web plate is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes in the web plate to gusset connection. In the example above, this distance would be ' 0 ' (zero) since the nearest column of holes is centered over the work line of the brace.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( spacing ): Column spacing This is the distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( hed ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the web plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the web plate to the gusset plate. See the example .
