" Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Bolted " connection design locks

A welded tee end fitting shop welds to an HSS, pipe or tube vertical brace when ' Bolted ' is selected as the brace's " Pipe/tube end-fitting ." Design of the welded tee and field bolting of the fitting to a gusset plate on a column is done per " Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Bolted " locks. Each welded tee consists of a stem plate and a cap plate .

(" Pipe/tube end-fitting " = ' Bolted ')

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Bolted
(HSS welded tee end fitting for field bolting to a gusset on a column)

Stem plate

Thickness ( stem thickness ): The distance between the near and far side faces of the stem plate. This is The " Material thickness " of the stem plate material. Increasing the " Thickness " moves the surface farthest from the gusset plate. See example .

Width ( stem width ): The distance between the two corners of the forward edge of the stem plate. Since the stem plate is rectangular, this is also the length of the edge of stem plate that welds to the cap plate. The width of the plate is perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. See example .

Length ( stem length ): The length of either of the two edges of the stem plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. See example .

The " Minus dimension " ( refx ) under " Setbacks " on the Vertical Brace Edit window can be used to adjust the refx distance that is shown in the example .

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace to the length edge of the stem plate (the length edge is parallel with the work line). This distance is measured perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace in the same plane as the stem plate. Changing the " Refy " slides the stem plate sideways, perpendicular to the work line. It does not move the holes in the plate since hole placement is set using the " Distance to 1st hole along brace " and " Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ," etc.

Stem plate to cap plate connection ( shop welded )

Weld size ( stem weld ): The weld size for shop welding the back edge (near and far sides) of the stem plate to the cap plate. This is labeled "stem weld" in the example .

Stem plate to gusset connection ( field bolted )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the gusset plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the brace to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any one column of holes. Bolt row spacing on a vertical brace gusset plate runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. For a ' Bolted ' end fitting (welded tee), these holes are for field bolting the stem plate to the gusset. Entering ' 0 ' removes the holes. For the brace in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 5 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The positive distance parallel with the work line of the vertical brace from the work point to the center of the nearest hole (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): The distance from the forward edge of the welded-tee stem plate to the nearest hole in the stem plate (see example ). The forward edge is the stem plate edge that is closest to the work point of the HSS vertical brace. Holes in the stem plate are for field bolting the stem plate to the gusset plate.

Other edge distance along brace ( other ed ): The distance from the edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for field bolting the stem plate to the gusset plate (see example ).

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the gusset plate. For a ' Bolted ' end fitting (welded tee), these holes are for field bolting the stem plate to the gusset. Column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( perp ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes in the stem plate. In the example above, this distance would be half the " Hole spacing perpendicular to brace " since the work line of the brace is centered between the two columns of holes.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( spacing ): Column spacing. This is the distance (measured center to center) between any two columns of holes in the stem plate (see example ) .If you want only a single column of holes, enter ' 0 ' as the " Column spacing ."Column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( H ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the stem plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the stem plate to the gusset plate. See the example .

Cap plate

Thickness ( cap thickness ): The " Material thickness " of the cap plate. Increasing the cap plate " Thickness " moves the back face of the cap plate toward the opposite end of the vertical brace, while the forward face of the cap plate remains the same distance from the work point. See example .

Width ( cap width ): The width of the cap plate is perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace and in a plane that is parallel with the near-side surface of the gusset plate. It is labeled as "cap width" in the example .

Length ( cap length ): The length of the cap plate is in a plane that is perpendicular to the plane of the near-side surface of the gusset plate. It is labeled as "cap length" in the example .

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace to the length edge of the cap plate. This distance is measured perpendicular with the work line of the vertical brace in the same plane as the width edge of the cap plate. Changing the " Refy " slides the cap plate up or down along the width of the cap plate.

Refz ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace to the edge of the cap plate. This distance is measured perpendicular with the work line of the vertical brace and parallel with the length of the cap plate. Changing the " Refz " slides the cap plate sideways, parallel with its length. The default centers the cap plate with respect to the work line (the neutral axis) of the HSS brace.

Cap plate to brace connection ( shop welded )

Weld size ( cap weld ): The weld size for shop welding the HSS, pipe or tube vertical brace to the cap plate. This is labeled "cap weld" in the example .
