Line Extend Multiple ( Drawing Editor )

Tool summary :

  • Extends or truncates one or more line segments to other line segments. You select the lines.
  • First you select the line(s) that you want the other line(s) to be extended to. Second you select the line(s) to extend.

   Examples (also see the step-by-step instructions ) :

Case 1: Extending line segments to multiple line segments. The following example shows that the 2nd lines are extended to the nearest of the 1st lines selected.


Case 2: Truncating line segments to multiple line segments. In the example below, the 1st lines are truncated to the 2nd lines elected. Each end is truncated to the line that is nearest to it, and the end that is nearest to a line is the one that is truncated. One of the line segment selected 2nd already intersects a line, so Extend to Multiple does nothing but unselect that segment.

Case 3: If the 2nd line segments selected will not, if extended, meet any of the 1st segments, Extend to Multiple does nothing but unselect the segments that you selected. In the example below, the segment selected 2nd is parallel to, doesn't meet, or already intersects the 1st segments selected.

   Step-by-step instructions (also see the examples ) :

The following instructions assume that you are using a 3-button mouse.

1 . Invoke Line Extend Multiple using any one (1) of the following methods:

Method 1 : Click the Line Extend Multiple icon. The icon can be taken from the group named ' Objects -- Lines ' and placed on a toolbar (classic) or the ribbon (lightning).

Method 2 : If " Drawing Editor layout style " is ' Classic ', you can use the menu system to choose Objects > Lines > Extend Multiple

Method 3, 4 or 5 : Line Extend Multiple can also be invoked using a keyboard shortcut , the context menu , or a mode . For the ' Lightning ' layout style, configuration of the interface is done using Customize Interface .

2 . Select - Pan - Menu mouse bindings become active. The status line prompts, " Extend Line - Select lines to extend to .".

2a : Left-click ( Select ) the first of the line(s) that you want the line(s) that you will select in step 3 to be extended to. Hold down the Shift key ( Select + ) to select additional lines Hold down the Ctrl key ( Select- ) to deselect lines. Press Enter or right-click ( Menu ) and choose " OK, " or hold down the Ctrl key and right click ( OK ) when you are done selecting.

Note: The extents of the line(s) that you select in step 2a will not be changed.

3 . Select - Pan - Menu mouse bindings remain active. The status line prompts, " Extend Line - Select lines to be extended ."

3a : Left-click ( Select ) the first of the line(s) that you want to extend to. Hold down the Shift key ( Select + ) to select additional lines Hold down the Ctrl key ( Select- ) to deselect lines. Press Enter or right-click ( Menu ) and choose " OK " when you are done selecting.

4 . The line(s) that you selected in step 3a are extended or truncated to the line(s) that you selected in step 2a, as illustrated by the previous examples :

Case 1: The lines that you selected in step 3a are extended to the nearest line(s) that you selected in step 2a.

Case 2: The lines that you selected in step 3a are truncated to lines that you selected in step 2a.

Case 3: Lines are neither extended or truncated. Such lines are deselected.

Tip: You can Edit > Undo (or Ctrl+z ) to undo an Extend Multiple.
