" Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Web Plate " connection design locks

NS and FS web plates for connecting a wide flange vertical brace to a gusset are designed per " Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Web Plate " locks when ' Standard ' is the " Connection arrangement ." The following illustrations show a vertical-brace-to-beam-&-column framing situation. Instead of web plates (shown), the web connection can be channels .

(W vertical brace, web plates field bolted to gusset, to a beam & column)
(vertical brace " Section size " = wide flange, S shape or welded plate wide flange)
(" Input connection type " = ' Vbrc Plate ' or ' User defined ')
(" Web orientation " = ' Vertical ')
(" Connection arrangement " = ' Standard ')
(" Web connection type " = ' Web plates ' or ' Channel ')

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Web plate to gusset connection (field bolted)

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > The " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the gusset plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered below, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the brace to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on the vertical brace gusset plate. Bolt rows on a vertical brace gusset plate run perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace, parallel with its depth. For the wide flange vertical brace shown in the example above, the number of " Bolt rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest row of holes on the gusset plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( S ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the gusset plate (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( ed ): The distance from the forward edge of the web plate to the nearest hole on the web plate. This distance is measured along the work line of the wide flange vertical brace. The forward edge of the web plate is the plate's width edge that is nearest to the work point of the brace. See the example .

Other edge distance along brace ( other ed ): The distance from the connection edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for field bolting the web plate to the gusset. This distance is measured along the work line of the wide flange vertical brace. See the example .

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the gusset plate. These holes will be used for field bolting the near-side and far-side vertical brace web plates or channels to the gusset plate. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( column spacing ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace, parallel to the depth of the brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( hed ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the web plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the web plate to the gusset plate. See the example .

The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here together with the " Hole type " entered below set the diameter of holes through the brace. :

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on this end of the vertical brace. For the wide flange vertical brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest row of holes on the web of the vertical brace (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( s ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the vertical brace (see example ). Bolt row spacing on a vertical brace web plate (or channel ) runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( ed ): The distance from the edge of the web plate to the nearest hole in the web plate for shop bolting the web plate to the web of the wide flange vertical brace (see example ). The edge of the web plate that is referred to here is perpendicular to the work line of the brace and is that plates' width edge that rests on the web of the wide flange brace.

Other edge distance along brace ( oed ): The distance from the forward edge of the wide flange vertical brace's web to the nearest hole in the brace's web for shop bolting the web plate (see example ). The forward edge of the wide flange vertical brace is the edge of the brace's web that is closest to the work point of the brace. The two width edges of each web plate are parallel to this edge.

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the brace. These holes will be used for shop bolting the vertical brace web plates (or channels ) to the brace. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace:

For channel web connections (settings for both NS and FS channels)

Section size ( not depicted ): A channel section. Connection design creates the web connection using the section size that is entered here when -- in " Connection specifications " on the Vertical Brace Edit window -- the " Web connection type " is set to ' Channel ' and the " Flange connection type " is set to ' None '. The connection consists of two channel sections that bolt together, one on each side (NS and FS) of the vertical brace web.
