" End Plate " connection design locks

An end plate is designed per " End Plate " locks for the gusset-to-column connection in a vertical brace to beam & column framing situation when the beam-to-column connection is an ' End plate ' connection. On the beam, the end plate may be set to " Combine... " (not shown). On combined end plates, " Workpoint to... " and " Rows... " are the only settings.

(gusset-to-column end plate, vertical brace to beam & column)
(vertical brace " Section size " = any valid shape)
(" Input connection type " = ' Vbrc Plate ' or ' User defined ')
(if the beam has an end plate, the gusset field bolts to the column with an end plate)
" End Plate "
( an end plate is required on the beam )

Gusset Beam Column (HSS, pipe or tube vertical brace)
Gusset Beam Column (stem-vertical tee vertical brace)
Gusset Beam Column (wide flange vertical brace, standard)
Gusset Beam Column (wide flange vertical brace, paddle)
Gusset Beam Column (wide flange vertical brace, claw angles)

Please note the following: To get an end plate welded to the gusset plate for field bolting the gusset plate to the column, the beam end that the brace's gusset plate shop attaches to must have an end plate. That beam's end plate can be combined with the end plate that is shop welded to the gusset plate. On combined end plates, " Workpoint to... " and " Rows... " are the only settings that are shown for the brace. Combined end plates are designed when " Combine... " is set to ' Yes ' on the beam. For additional control over a combined end plate, you can use the " End Plate " connection design locks on the Beam Edit window.

Connection Guide: Click here .

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :

Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ).

  End Plate
(vertical brace to beam & column)

Work point to end plate (vertical) ( to end plate ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the supporting column) from the work point of the vertical brace to the top edge of the end plate (see example ). This distance is vertical if the supporting column is non-sloping.

End plate length ( length ): The distance between the top and bottom edges of the end plate (see example ). Changing the " Rows of bolts " or " Row spacing " also changes the " End plate length " if the field is left unlocked ( ).

End plate width ( width ): The distance between the near-side edge of the end plate and the far-side edge of the end plate. Since the end plate is rectangular, this is also the length of either the top edge or the bottom edge of the end plate (see example ).

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): The diameter of bolts for field bolting the end plate to the column. You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " selected below, set the diameter of holes the bolts go into.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter ," set the diameter of holes for field bolting the end plate to the column.

Workpoint to 1st hole (vertical) ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the length of the end plate or the work line of the supporting column) from the work point of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole in the end plate (see example ). This distance is vertical only if the supporting column is non-sloping. As noted above , this is one of only two connection design locks that are available on the brace if, on the Beam Edit window, the beam and brace end plates are set to " Combine... "

Gage NS: The horizontal distance from the gusset center line to the nearest column of holes on the near side of the end plate. In the example above, the nearest column of holes is the inside column. The near side of the end plate is the half of the plate plate that is on the near side of the gusset plate.

Gage FS: Same as " Gage NS ," except that this gage applies to the far-side half of the end plate (see example ). The far side of the end plate is the half of the end plate that is on the far side of the gusset plate.

Rows of bolts ( rows ): The number of holes in any column of holes in the end plate (all hole columns have the same number of bolts -- see example ). Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work line of the column (vertically if the column is vertical). In the example above, the number of " Rows of bolts " is ' 4 '. If you change the number of " Rows of bolts " and " End plate length " is unlocked ( ), the length of the end plate is automatically recalculated. As noted above , this is one of only two connection design locks that are available on the brace if, on the Beam Edit window, the beam and brace end plates are set to " Combine... "

Row spacing: The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes in the end plate (see example ). If you change the " Row spacing " and " End plate length " is unlocked ( ), the length of the end plate is automatically recalculated. Alternative : Instead of entering a single row spacing distance, you can enter variable hole spacing. See the video and table below.

VIDEO Variable hole spacing can be typed to locked " Vertical hole spacing " fields found in leaves named " Shear Tab " " Bent Plate " " End Plate " and " NS/FS Clip ."

Rows Spacing Result
5 3,5,3,3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3"
5 3,5,2@3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3"
5 3,5,3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3"
(the last spacing -- 3 -- is repeated to fill the spaces that are required for the number of rows)
5 3,5,3,3,2,3 End connection failure message (see below).

End connection failure message: Variable row spacing specifies too many rows

Top row edge ( top edge ): The distance from the top edge of the gusset plate to the top row of holes (see example ).

Bottom row edge ( bttm edge ): The distance from the bottom edge of the gusset plate to the bottom row of hoes (see example ).

Columns of bolts ( columns ): Half of the total number of columns of holes to be used for field bolting the end plate to the column. Each half of the end plate has this number of " Columns of bolts ." In the example shown, the number of " Columns of bolts " is ' 2 ', which means that the total number of columns is ' 4 ' (since 2 x 2 = 4).

Column spacing: The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent columns of holes that are on the same side (near side or far side) of the end plate (see example ). The near side of the end plate is on the near side of the gusset plate.

Horizontal to 1st hole (horizontal):

Column edge NS: The distance from the near-side vertical edge of the end plate to the nearest column of holes. For an end plate with two columns of holes on its near side (as in the example ), the nearest column of holes will be the outer column of holes on the near side of the end plate.

Column edge FS ( edge FS ): The distance from the far-side vertical edge of the end plate to the nearest column of holes. For an end plate with two columns of holes on its far side (as in the example ), the nearest column of holes is the outer column of holes.

Weld

Weld size ( not depicted ): The weld size used to shop weld the end plate to the gusset plate.
