" Brace Connection To Gusset " connection design locks

A wide flange vertical brace field bolts to a gusset plate per choices made to " Brace Connection To Gusset " locks. The wide flange brace's flanges are cut flush to the side of the web (NS or FS) that field bolts to the gusset (" Side of gusset " = ' Near side ' or ' Far side '). The gusset shop attaches to the beam in the vertical-brace-to-beam-&-column framing situation per choices made to either " Weld Conn2 " or " NS/FS Clip Conn2 " locks. For " NS/FS Clip Conn2 " locks to be available, the beam must connect to the column with a clip angle.

(" Input connection type " = ' Vbrc Plate ' or ' User defined ')
(" Web orientation " = ' Vertical ')
(" Side of gusset " = ' Near side ' or ' Far side ')
" Brace Connection To Gusset "
(hole pattern for field bolts)

The gusset plate shop welds to the beam (" Weld Conn2 "), or can shop bolt with a clip angle (" NS/FS Clip Conn2 ") if the beam has a clip angle. The gusset field attaches to the column with a clip angle (shown) or shear plate or end plate . Click here for an example from the Connection Guide.

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

VIDEO A wide flange vertical brace produces the failure message, " WF brace flg is too narrow for connection ." This is fixed by switching the " Side of gusset " from ' Center ' to ' Near side ' or ' Far side ', thus field bolting the web of the wide flange directly to the gusset.

Connection design locks :

Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ).

  Brace Connection To Gusset
( wide flange vertical brace, web field bolted to gusset, to a beam & column )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the gusset plate and the web of the wide flange vertical brace.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the brace to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes in the vertical brace gusset plate (see example ). Bolt rows on a vertical brace gusset plate run perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. For the wide flange vertical brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole in the gusset plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes in the gusset plate (see example ).

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge distance ): This distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the wide flange vertical brace that is nearest to the work point to the row of holes that is nearest to that edge (see example ).

Other edge distance along brace ( other edge distance ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for bolting the web of the wide flange vertical brace to the gusset plate (see example ). The edge of the gusset plate referred to here is the edge that the vertical brace frames to.

Columns: The number of columns of holes in the gusset plate (see example ). These holes are for field bolting the wide flange vertical brace to the gusset. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( colsp ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.
