" Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Paddle " connection design locks

Each of the two flange paddle plates for field bolting a wide flange vertical brace to a gusset plate is a mirror image of the other and is designed per " Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Paddle " locks when ' Paddle plates ' is the " Connection arrangement ." The paddle plates shop weld to a gusset that shop attaches to a column & base plate (shown) or column & cap plate (not shown).

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :

Brace Connection To Gusset Wide Flange Paddle
( wide flange, paddle plates, to a beam )

Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ).

Paddle plate

Length ( plate length ): The length of either one of the two edges of the paddle plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. This affects the length of both paddle plates. See example .

Width ( pw ): The distance between the two corners of the front or back edge of either paddle plate. The width of the plate is perpendicular to the work line of the wide flange vertical brace. See example . The default " Width " is the flange width of the wide flange material that is used as the " Section size " of the vertical brace.

Plate thickness ( thickness ): The " Material thickness " of the paddle plate material. This applies to each of the two paddle plates. See example . Increasing the " Thickness " adds material opposite to the flange the paddle plate attaches to. This ensures that the paddle plate remains the field clearance distance away from the flange. The paddle-to-gusset weld adjusts with the thickness of the paddle plate.

End connection failure message: Paddle plate won't fit inside HSS brace

Refx ( not depicted ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the wide flange vertical brace) from the work point of the vertical brace to the nearest edge of either paddle plate (to its forward edge). Increasing the " Refx " moves both paddle plates parallel with the work line toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. The holes in the paddle plate do not move since their placement is governed by the " Workpoint to group ."

Refy: The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the wide flange vertical brace) from the work line of the brace to the inside face of the paddle plate. Both paddle plates are this same distance from the work line.

Paddle io gusset connection ( shop weld )

Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the paddle plates to the gusset plate. The paddle plates field bolt to the flanges of the wide flange vertical brace. See example .

Weld length ( not depicted ): A distance that is the length of the weld. To leave a 1/2-inch (13 mm) gap between the gusset and the end of the notch, the " Weld length " is, by default, 1/2 inch shorter than the notch length.

The eye button ( or ) for weld " Length " on the Edit Weld(s) window in Modeling sets whether or not a particular shop weld will have its weld length depicted on its weld symbol when that weld symbol is generated by Detail Members .

Paddle to brace connection ( field bolted )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the paddle plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the paddle plates to the brace.

Rows: The total number of holes in any one column of holes. Bolt row spacing on a vertical brace paddle plate runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. See example .

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the wide flange vertical brace) from the work point of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole in either paddle plate. See example . Increasing the " Distance to 1st hole along brace " moves the hole groups on both paddle plates along the flanges of the wide flange brace toward the opposite end of the brace.

Hole spacing along brace ( sp ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes. See example .

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( ed ): The distance from the forward edge of the wide flange brace to the nearest flange hole for field bolting the paddle plate to the flange of the brace. The forward edge of the brace is the edge nearest to the brace's work point. This distance is measured parallel with the work line of the wide flange vertical brace. See the example .

Other edge distance along brace ( oed ): The distance from the width edge of the paddle plate to the nearest hole for field bolting the paddle plate to the flange of the wide flange vertical brace. The width edge referred to here is the width edge that is farthest from the work point of the brace and therefore farthest from the gusset plate. This distance is measured parallel with the work line of the wide flange vertical brace. See the example .

Columns ( columns per side ): The number of columns of holes on one side of the vertical brace web. This is half of the total number of columns of holes in the paddle plate. The example above shows ' 1 ' column per side. Enter ' 2 ' here if you want a total of 4 columns.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( P ): The distance from the center line of the paddle plate to the nearest column of holes. The inside column of holes on each half of a paddle plate are this distance from the center line of the paddle plate. The center line of each paddle plate coincides with half the width of the wide flange brace's flange.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( not depicted ): Column spacing. This is not shown in the example because only a single column is shown per side. If ' 2 ' were entered to " Columns ," then this would be the distance between those two columns.

Horizontal edge distance ( hed ): The distance perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace from either length edge of the paddle plate to the nearest hole. Both length edges on each of the two paddle plates are this distance from the nearest column of holes. See the example .
