HSS horizontal braces with paddle plates field bolt to an intersection plate per " Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Paddle " locks when " Pipe/tube end-fitting " is set to ' Paddle Plate '. The " Length " of the paddle plate runs parallel with the brace. The paddle-to-brace connection " Weld length " controls the length of the notch in the brace. Locks for spacers are available for double paddle plates.

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in a user defined connection file will automatically be locked on a member edit window for which that file is the " Input connection type ." You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Horizontal Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Paddle plate

Length: The length of either of the two edges of the paddle plate that are parallel with the work line of the horizontal brace. See the example . This dimension is the same for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Width: The width of the forward edge of the paddle plate. Since the paddle plate is rectangular, this is also the width of the interior edge of the paddle plate. This dimension is perpendicular to the work line of the horizontal brace. See the example . This dimension is the same for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the paddle plate. Increasing the " Plate thickness " moves the bottom surface of the paddle plate down, while the top surface remains at the same elevation, flush to the bottom face of the gusset. The near-side and far-side " Notch width " in the brace material is updated automatically. See the example . This dimension is the same for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Refx: The distance from the forward edge of the paddle plate to the work point of the brace. Tip: To get a properly designed connection, the " Minus dimension " ( " Setbacks " leaf, Horizontal Brace Edit window) should be made equal to the distance you enter here. See the example . This dimension is the same for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the horizontal brace) from the work line of the horizontal brace to the length edge of the paddle plate (the length edge is parallel with the work line). Changing the " Refy " slides the paddle plate sideways (moves it perpendicular to the work line) -- it does not move the holes in the plate since hole placement is set on the gusset plate. This dimension is the same for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Paddle to brace connection (shop welded)

Weld size ( not depicted ): The weld size for shop welding the paddle plate to the brace. Weld is placed along the NS and FS notches in the brace. This weld size is used for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Weld length ( not depicted ): The length of the welds along the notches in the NS or FS of the horizontal brace. Assuming that the related lockable fields are unlocked ( ), increasing the " Weld length " also increases the " Notch length " entered for the HSS brace's NS and FS notches in " End preparations ." This weld length is used for both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Paddle to intersection plate connection (field bolted)

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): The diameter of the field bolts for bolting the paddle plate to the intersection plate. You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolts " list. The bolt diameter entered here, along with the " Hole type " entered below, together set the diameter of the holes the bolts goes into. The two supported braces can be bolted to the intersection plate with different bolt diameters. The same bolts are inserted through both paddle plates in a double paddle plate .

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . This sets the hole type hole type for all bolts on the horizontal brace intersection plate. If you enter a different " Hole type " for each of the two supported horizontal braces, connection design uses the hole type entered for the left brace. A horizontal brace intersection plate is a submaterial of the supporting brace and field bolts to the two supported braces. In a double paddle plate , this hole type applies to both paddle plates.

Rows: The total number of holes in a column of holes on the paddle plate associated with the brace that you are editing. Row spacing on a paddle plate runs parallel with the work line of the horizontal brace. For the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 3 '. In a double paddle plate , this number applies to both paddle plates.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the horizontal brace) from the brace's work point to the center of the nearest row of holes in the paddle plate. See the example . In a double paddle plate , this distance applies to both paddle plates.

Hole spacing along brace ( rsp ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes. Row spacing on an HSS brace's paddle plate runs parallel with the work line of the horizontal brace. See the example . In a double paddle plate , this spacing applies to both paddle plates.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the forward edge of the paddle plate to the nearest hole in the paddle plate. The paddle plate's forward edge is the edge that is closest to the work point of the HSS horizontal brace. Holes in the paddle plate are for bolting the paddle plate to the intersection plate. See the example . In a double paddle plate , this edge distance applies to both paddle plates.

Other edge distance along brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the edge of the intersection plate to the nearest hole for bolting the paddle plate to the intersection plate. In a double paddle plate , this edge distance applies to both paddle plates.

Columns ( cols ): The number of columns of holes for field bolting the paddle plate to the intersection plate. In the example above, the number of columns is ' 2 '. In a double paddle plate , this number applies to both paddle plates.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( not depicted ): The distance from the work line of the horizontal brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes in the paddle plate. In the example above, this distance would be half the " Hole spacing perpendicular to brace " since the work line of the brace is centered between the two columns of holes. In a double paddle plate , this distance applies to both paddle plates.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( csp ): Column spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between any two adjacent columns of holes in the paddle plate (see example ). Column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the horizontal brace. In a double paddle plate , this spacing applies to both paddle plates.

Horizontal edge distance ( not depicted ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the horizontal brace) from the length edge of the paddle plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the paddle plate to the intersection plate. See the example . In a double paddle plate , this edge distance applies to both paddle plates.

Spacers ( for double paddle plates ):

Connection design locks for paddle plate spacers are shown in the " Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Paddle " leaf only when the horizontal brace's " Pipe/tube end-fitting " is set to ' Double Paddle Plate '.

Length ( len ): The length dimension of the spacer is parallel with the width of the two paddle plates that the spacers are inserted between. Each spacer is centered with respect to the center of the paddle plate's width. The length you enter here should be sufficient to cause the spacers to project beyond the length edges of the paddle plates so that the spacers can be welded to the paddle plates.

Width: The width dimension of the spacer is parallel with the length of the paddle plates.

Plate thickness ( thck ): The thickness of the spacer is the distance that separates the two paddle plates. Changing this distance also adjusts bolt lengths and the gap between paddle plates.

Refx: The distance from the interior edge of either paddle plate to the nearest edge of the nearest spacer. This distance is measured parallel with the length of the paddle plates. It sets the distance that the first spacer is indented from the interior edges of the two paddle plates.

Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the spacers to the top and bottom edges of the paddle plates.

Number of spacers ( num ): 1 or 2 or etc . (a counting number). If you change the number of spacers, you should also adjust their width and the spacing between them. Changing the number of spaces does not adjust the length of the paddle plates.

Spacer spacing ( spacing ): The distance that any two adjacent spacers are apart from one another. In other words, this dimension is the space between spacers.
