" Brace Connection To Gusset Wtee " connection design locks

Web plates shop bolt to a stem-vertical W tee vertical brace and field bolt to a gusset plate for a beam & column. Only the near-side web plate is shown. The W tee brace may be stem ' Down ' (shown) or stem ' Up ' (not shown). For webs thinner than the gusset, connection design creates fill plates on both sides.

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

( stem-vertical W tee vertical brace, web plates, to a beam & column )

Web plates

Length ( plate length ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the stem-vertical tee brace) between the two edges of the near side connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here also applies to the far side connection plate.

Width ( plate width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the stem-vertical tee brace) between the two edges of the near side connection plate that are parallel with the work line of the brace (see example ). In other words, this is the length of either of the two edges of the connection plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here also applies to the far side connection plate.

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the near side connection plate. This also sets the thickness of the far side connection plate.

Refx ( plate refx ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the stem-vertical tee brace) from the work point for this end of the brace to the nearest edge of the near side connection plate (see example ). This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Refy ( not depicted ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the stem-vertical tee brace) from the work line to the edge of the near side connection plate that is closest to and parallel with the flange of the tee brace (see example ). This distance also applies to the far side connection plate.

Web plate to gusset connection ( field bolted )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the gusset plate and the stem-vertical tee brace connection plate.

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes for field bolting the web connection plate to the gusset plate.

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on the vertical brace gusset plate (see example ). Bolt rows on a vertical brace gusset plate run perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. For the stem-vertical tee brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the gusset plate (see example ).

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the gusset plate (see example ). Changing the " Hole spacing along brace " causes the web plate " Length " to be adjusted.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge distance ): This distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the web plate that is nearest to the work point of the brace to the row of holes that is nearest to that edge (see example ).

Other edge distance along brace ( other edge distance ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the gusset plate to the nearest hole for bolting the web plate to the gusset plate (see example ). The edge of the gusset plate referred to here is the edge that the web plate frames to.

Columns: The number of columns of holes on the gusset plate (see example ). These holes will be used for field bolting the stem-vertical tee brace connection plate to the gusset. In the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 '.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( colsp ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( gus hed ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the web plate to the nearest column of holes for field bolting the web plate to the gusset plate. See the example .

The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes through the the stem-vertical tee brace brace and its web plate.

Distance to 1st hole along brace: The distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the center of the nearest hole on the web of the stem-vertical tee brace (see example ).

Rows: The total number of holes in any column of holes on the vertical brace to web plate connection (see example ). Bolt rows run perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. For the stem-vertical tee brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Hole spacing along brace ( row spacing ): The distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes on the vertical brace half of the web plate (see example ). Changing the " Hole spacing along brace " causes the web plate " Length " to be adjusted.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): This distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the web plate that is farthest from the work point of the brace to the row of holes that is nearest to that edge (see example ).

Other edge distance along brace ( other edge dist ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the brace) from the edge of the stem-vertical tee brace to the nearest hole for bolting the web plate to the brace (see example ). The edge of the brace referred to here is the edge that is nearest to the gusset plate.
