" Gusset Beam Column " & " Weld Conn2 " connection design locks

The gusset plate for a stem-vertical W Tee vertical brace to a beam & column (" Gusset Beam Column ") shop welds to the beam per " Weld Conn2 " locks, or can shop bolt to the beam with per " NS/FS Clip Conn2 " locks if the beam has a clip angle. The gusset field bolts to the column with a clip angle (shown) or shear plate or end plate .

Field bolting the gusset to the column : If the beam connects to the column with a clip angle, the gusset plate field bolts to the column with a clip angle . If the beam connects to the column with a shear plate, the gusset field bolts to a shear plate that shop welds to the column. If the beam field bolts to the column with an end plate, the gusset plate also field bolts to the column with an end plate .

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in the user defined connection file will automatically be locked on the member edit window. You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

  Gusset Beam Column
( stem-vertical tee vertical brace to a beam & column )

Gusset plate dimensions and location

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the gusset plate.

Width ( plate width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) from the framing edge of the gusset plate (the edge that welds to the beam in the example shown) to the opposite edge of the gusset plate (which is parallel to the framing edge of the gusset plate).

Length ( plate length ): The length of the framing edge of the gusset plate (which welds to the supporting beam in the example shown). The gusset plate " Length " is measured parallel with the work line of the supporting beam.

Refx: The positive (+) or negative (-) distance (parallel with the supporting beam's work line ) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the corner of the framing edge of the gusset plate that this end of the vertical brace points toward (see example ). For a gusset plate that fastens to a non-sloping beam, this distance is horizontal. A " Refx " of ' 0 ' aligns the corner of the gusset plate with the work point. Entering a positive (+) distance moves the gusset plate parallel with the beam's work line toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. Entering a negative (-) distance moves the corner of the gusset plate parallel with the beam's work line in the direction that this end of the vertical brace points toward. Changing the " Refx " moves the gusset plate, but does not move the holes on the plate.

Refy: The positive (+) or negative (-) distance (perpendicular to the supporting beam's work line ) from the work point for this end of the vertical brace to the framing edge of the gusset plate (which welds to the beam's bottom flange in the example shown). For a gusset plate that fastens to a non-sloping beam, this distance is vertical. A " Refy " of ' 0 ' aligns the framing edge of the gusset plate with the work point and parallel to the beam's work line. Entering a positive (+) distance moves the gusset plate perpendicular to the beam's work line toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. Entering a negative (-) distance moves the gusset plate perpendicular to the beam's work line in the direction that this end of the horizontal brace points toward. Changing the " Refy " moves the plate, but does not move the holes on the plate.

Connection cut width ( cut width ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of the connection edge of the gusset plate. The connection edge is the edge that the stem-vertical tee brace connects to with web plates (see example ). This distance is not the actual width of the connection edge, but the width of that edge as measured parallel with the depth of the beam.

Connection cut length ( cut length ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the supporting beam) between the two corners of the connection edge of the gusset plate. The connection edge is the edge that the stem-vertical tee brace connects to with web plates (see example ). This distance is not the actual length of the connection edge, but the length of that edge as measured parallel with the framing edge of the gusset plate -- that is, parallel with the beam.

Clip column side cut width ( column side cut width ): A distance that is measured parallel with depth of the beam. This sets the width of the clip cut along the edge of the gusset plate that opposite to the framing edge of the gusset plate. The framing edge of the gusset plate is the edge that shop attaches to the beam. The affected edge is shown in the example above. An entry of ' 0 ' makes the affected edge parallel with the framing edge of the gusset plate and parallel with the beam.

Clip column side cut length ( column side cut length ): A distance that is measured parallel with the work line of the beam. This sets the length of the clip cut along the edge of the gusset plate that opposite to the framing edge of the gusset plate. The framing edge of the gusset plate is the edge that shop attaches to the beam. The affected edge is shown in the example above.

Clip beam side cut width ( beam side cut width ): A distance that is measured parallel with the depth of the beam. This sets the width of the clip cut along the edge of the gusset plate that is between the top corner of the gusset's connection cut and the inside corner of the gusset plate's framing edge. The framing edge of the gusset plate is the edge that shop attaches to the beam. The affected edge is shown in the example above.

Clip beam side cut length ( beam side cut length ): A distance that is measured parallel with the work line of the beam. This sets the length of the clip cut along the edge of the gusset plate that is between the top corner of the gusset's connection cut and the inside corner of the gusset plate's framing edge. The framing edge of the gusset plate is the edge that shop attaches to the beam. The affected edge is shown in the example above. An entry of ' 0 ' makes the affected edge parallel with the depth of the beam.

  Weld Conn2
( stem-vertical tee vertical brace to a beam & column )

Shop weld, gusset plate to the supporting beam

Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the gusset plate to the supporting beam (see example ). The gusset can optionally bolt to the beam with a clip angle (" NS/FS Clip Conn2 ") if the beam has a clip angle. Regardless of whether it is shop welded or shop bolted, the gusset is detailed with the beam and field bolted to the vertical brace and column.

To get a weld (" Weld Conn2 "), select ' Welded ' for " Gusset to supporting member " under " Connection specifications " on the Vertical Brace Edit window.

To instead get a clip angle (" NS/FS Clip Conn2 "), select ' Clip Angle ' for " Gusset to supporting member ."
