" Bent Plate " connection design locks
Bent plates can be bolted (shown) or welded (not shown) to the web of a beam and are designed per " Bent Plate " locks. A bent plate can attach to the near side, far side or both sides of the beam's web. " Vertical hole spacing " can be variable spacing ( ). |

Connection Guide: Click here .
User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in a user defined connection file will automatically be locked on a member edit window for which that file is the " Input connection type ." You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.
Beam Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :
Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ). Options for " NS Bent Plate " and " FS Bent Plate " and " Web Bolts " and " NS OSL Bolts " and " FS OSL Bolts " and " Weld " are visible only when they apply. |
Bent Plate
All bent plates
Top of bent plate ( top ): The distance from the top flange of the supported beam to the top edge of the bent plate (see example ). Changing the " Top of bent plate " moves the plate, but does not relocate the holes. The " Vertical 1st hole OSL " or " Vertical to 1st hole web " repositions the holes.
End connection failure message: Locked top of plate less than reqd minimum
Relative rotation ( not depicted ): The number of degrees relative to the orientation of the supported beam that the bent plate is to be rotated. A " Relative rotation " of ' 0 ' aligns the top of the clip angle parallel with the top flange of the beam. If you lock ( ) this field and enter a value other than the value that connection design enters automatically, you will get the failure message " Design of rotated connections is not supported ."
Design of rotated connections is not supported Unlocking ( ) the " Relative rotation " causes the failure message to go away. It also causes connection design to repopulate the field with the value that rotates the bent plate so that it frames squarely to the face of the supporting member. If there is no supporting member, ' 0 ' is entered as the default " Relative rotation " value.
f you want to apply the locked value that produces this failure message, you need to " Force " the connection. A solids model will be created, but the Connection Design Calculations report (and Expanded Connection Design Calculations ) will include a warning that connection capacity calculations require engineering review since, as the message states, rotated connections are not supported.
Plate depth ( pl depth ): The distance between the top edge of the bent plate and the bottom edge of the bent plate (marked " depth " in the example ). If the " Plate depth " is unlocked ( ), changing the number of " Rows " or the " Vertical hole spacing " or the " Vertical to 1st hole " automatically adjusts the " Plate depth ."
End connection failure message: Connection geometry fails due to locked plate/angle length
End connection failure message: Beam not deep enough for connectionPlate thickness ( thickness ): The thickness of the plate material that the NS and FS bent plates are fabricated from. See the example .
End connection failure message: Angle thickness less than minimum required by AISC
NS bent plate (for bent plates to the ' Near Side ' or to ' Both ' sides of the web)
Width web: The distance from the heel of the bent plate to the tip of the bent plate leg that fastens to the web of the supported beam (see example ). This applies to the near-side bent plate.
Width OSL: The distance from the heel of the bent plate to the tip of the bent plate leg that fastens to the supporting beam or column (see example ). This applies to the near-side bent plate.
FS bent plate (for bent plates to the ' Far Side ' or to ' Both ' sides of the web)
Width web ( not depicted ): Same as " Width web ," except that this applies to the far-side bent plate. You get a far-side bent plate when the bent plate(s) are set to be attached to the ' Far Side ' or to 'Both ' sides of the web of the beam.
Width OSL ( not depicted ): Same as " Width OSL ," except that this applies to the far-side bent plate. You get a far-side bent plate when the bent plate(s) are set to be attached to the ' Far Side ' or to ' Both ' sides of the web of the beam.
All bolts
Diameter ( not depicted ): The bolt diameter for all bolts in the bent plate. This applies to both the near side and the far side bent plate. You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type web " or " Hole type OSL ," set the diameter of holes the bolts go into.
Rows: The number of rows of holes in the bent plate leg to the web. This is also the number of rows in the outstanding leg. This applies to both the near side and the far side bent plates.
Vertical hole spacing ( spacing ): The spacing between rows of holes in the bent plate. This applies to both legs of both the near side and the far side bent plates. It is the distance (center to center) between adjacent rows of holes in the leg of the bent plate that bolts to the web as well as in the outstanding leg (see example ). This distance is measured vertically if the web of the supported beam is vertical. If the " Plate depth " is unlocked ( ), changing the " Vertical hole spacing " adjusts the " Plate depth ." Alternative : Instead of entering a single hole spacing distance, you can enter variable hole spacing. See the video and table below.
VIDEO Variable hole spacing can be typed to locked " Vertical hole spacing " fields found in leaves named " Shear Tab "; " Bent Plate " " End Plate " and " NS/FS Clip ."
Rows Spacing Result 5 3,5,3,3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3" 5 3,5,2@3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3" 5 3,5,3 4 spaces at 3", 5", 3" and 3"
(the last spacing -- 3 -- is repeated to fill the spaces that are required for the number of rows)5 3,5,3,3,2,3 End connection failure message (see below). End connection failure message: Variable row spacing specifies too many rows
Web bolts (for bent plates ' Bolted ' to the beam's web)
Hole type: Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered below, set the hole diameter. This applies only to bent plates that are ' Bolted ' to the web of the supported beam. For bent plates that are ' Welded ' to the web of the supported beam, this option does not appear as a connection design lock.
Horizontal to 1st hole ( horz to 1st web ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the beam) from the heel of the bent plate to the center of the center of the nearest row of holes in the bent plate leg to the web of the supported beam (see example ). This applies only to bent plates that are ' Bolted ' to the web of the supported beam. For bent plates that are ' Welded ' to the web of the supported beam, this option does not appear as a connection design lock.
Vertical to 1st hole ( vert to 1st web ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the beam) from the top flange of the supported beam to the center of the nearest row of holes in the leg of the bent plate that bolts to the supported beam web (see example ). If the " Plate depth " is unlocked ( ), changing the " Vertical to 1st hole web " also changes the " Plate depth ." The holes move, but the " Top of bent plate " does not change. This applies only to bent plates that are ' Bolted ' to the web of the supported beam. For bent plates that are ' Welded ' to the web of the supported beam, this option does not appear as a connection design lock.
These locks apply to bent plates that are ' Bolted ' to the ' Supporting ' or ' Bolted ' to the ' Supported ' or ' Welded ' to to the ' Supported '. They apply when the bent plate(s) are set to be attached to the ' Near Side ' or to ' Both ' sides of the web of the beam. The locks are shown (visible) only when they apply. |
Hole type OSL ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the hole diameter. Click here for information on when this setting applies.
Horizontal to 1st hole ( horz to 1st OSL ): The distance (parallel with the work line of the beam) from the work line of the supported beam to the center of the first hole on the outstanding leg of the bent plate (see example ). The workline of a wide flange beam is the center of the top flange of the beam. For a channel beam, the workline is along the heel of the top flange of the channel. Click here for information on when this setting applies.
Vertical to 1st hole ( vert to 1st OSL ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the beam) from the top flange of the supported beam to the nearest row of holes in the outstanding leg of the bent plate (see example ). If the " Plate depth " is unlocked ( ), changing the " Vertical to 1st hole OSL " also adjusts the " Plate depth ." The holes move, but the " Top of bent plate " does not change. Click here for information on when this setting applies.
End connection failure message: Locked vertical to 1st hole less than minimum required or minimum setup value
