" Web Channel " & " Upper Web Fill Plate " connection design locks
Channel web splices for columns are designed per " Web Channel " locks to shop bolt or shop weld to the lower column and field bolt to the upper. Shop attachment can be to the ' Near side ' or ' Far side ' or ' Both ' sides of the lower column web. For channels on both sides, the same locks control both channels. An upper fill plate may be designed per " Upper Web Fill Plate " locks when the upper column web thickness is less than the lower. |

User Defined Connections: Settings that are locked ( ) in a user defined connection file will automatically be locked on a member edit window for which that file is the " Input connection type ." You can, if you so choose, manually lock additional settings on the member edit window, and your changes will be retained, through multiple processes, so long as you do not change to a different connection then switch back to the original user defined connection.
Column Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Connection design locks :
Locks not dimensioned or called out on the drawing are marked ( not depicted ). The locks under the " Bolts On the Lower Column " heading apply when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ' to the web of the lower column. |
Web Channel
( for field welded column splices )
Web channel
Channel length upper ( length upper ): The distance (parallel with the work lines of the columns) from the bottom work point (" End elevation ") of the upper column to the top edge of the channel splice (see example ). If the " Channel length upper " is unlocked ( ), changing the " Rows " (upper) or " Vertical spacing " (upper) also changes the " Channel length upper ." " Vertical to holes " (upper) moves the holes across the channel without affecting the channel length.
Channel length lower ( length lower ): The distance (parallel with the work lines of the columns) from the top work point (" End elevation ") of the lower column to the bottom edge of the channel splice (see example ). If the " Channel length lower " is unlocked ( ), changing the " Rows " (lower) or " Vertical spacing " (lower) also changes the " Channel length lower ." " Vertical to holes " (lower) moves the holes across the channel without affecting the channel length.
Channel material ( not depicted ): The section size of the channel material to be used. For example, C9x15. The channel you enter here must exist in the local shape file, or validation will not accept your entry. To enter a channel section size, you can type in the section size that you want, or you can press the "file cabinet" browse button ( ) and double-click a section size from the list of available channels in the local shape file . The channel material that connection design uses by default comes from Column Splice Settings .
Field bolts on the upper column
Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolt diameters " list. The bolt diameter entered here (together with the " Hole type ") set the diameter of holes through the part of the channel that field bolts to the web of upper column. If channels have been designed on ' Both ' sides of the web, this diameter applies to both channels.
Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . The hole type selected here, together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, set the diameter of holes through the channel splice and, if applicable, the upper fill plate.
Rows ( rows upper ): The number of rows of bolts on the part of the channel splice that is above the bottom " End elevation " of the upper column. Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work lines of the columns being spliced -- see example . If the " Channel length upper " is unlocked ( ), changing the number of bolt " Rows " (upper) also changes the " Channel length upper . "
Vertical to holes ( vert to upper ): The distance (parallel with the work lines of the columns) from the bottom work point (" End elevation ") of the upper column to the center of the nearest row of field bolts in the upper part of the channel (see example ). Changing the " Vertical to holes " (upper) moves the holes on the channel, but does not change the channel length
Vertical spacing ( row spc upper ): The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent rows of bolts on the part of the channel splice that is above the " End elevation " of the bottom end of the upper column. Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work lines of the columns -- see example . If the " Channel length upper " is unlocked ( ) and the number of " Rows " (upper) is ' 2 ' or greater, changing the " Vertical spacing " (upper) also changes the " Channel length upper ."
Columns ( columns upper ): Half the total number of bolt columns on the part of the channel splice that field bolts to the web of the upper column. Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work lines of the columns being spliced. For the channel splice connection represented in the example above, the number of " Columns " is ' 2 ', which results in a total of four bolt columns.
Horizontal spacing ( col sp ): The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent bolt columns other than the two inside bolt columns (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work lines of the columns being spliced -- see example .
Horizontal gage ( gage upper ): The distance (center to center) between the two inside columns of bolts on the part of the channel splice that field bolts to the web of the upper column. Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work lines of the columns being spliced -- see example .
Welds on the lower column (applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Welded ')
Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the lower part of the channel to the web of the lower column. The upper part of a channel with a welded lower connection field bots to the web of the upper column.
Shop bolts on the lower column (applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ')
Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in any diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ' to the web of the lower column.
Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ' to the web of the lower column.
Rows ( rows lower ): The number of rows of bolts on the part of the channel splice that shop bolts to the web of lower column. This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted '. For the channel splice connection represented in the example above, the number of " Rows " (lower) is ' 2 '. If the " Channel length lower " is unlocked ( ), changing the number of " Rows " (lower) also changes the " Channel length lower ."
Vertical to holes ( vert to lower ): The distance (parallel with the work lines of the columns) from the top work point (" End elevation ") of the lower column to the center of the nearest row of shop bolts in the lower part of the channel (see example ). This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted '. Changing the " Vertical to holes " (lower) moves the holes on the channel but does not change the channel length.
Vertical spacing ( row spc lower ): The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent rows of bolts on the part of channel splice that shop bolts to the lower column. This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ' -- see example . If the " Channel length lower " is unlocked ( ) and the number of " Rows " (lower) is ' 2 ' or greater, changing the " Vertical spacing " (lower) also changes the " Channel length lower ."
Columns ( columns lower ): Half the total number of columns of bolts on the part of the channel web connection that shop bolts to the web of the lower column. This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted '. For the channel web splice connection represented in the example above, the number of bolt " Columns " is ' 2 ', which results in a total of four bolt columns.
Horizontal spacing ( col spc ): The distance (center to center) between any two adjacent bolt columns other than the two inside bolt columns on the part of the channel that shop bolts to the web of the lower column (see example ). This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted '.
Horizontal gage ( lower gage ): The distance (center to center) between the two inside columns of bolts on the part of the channel splice that shop bolts to the lower column. This applies when the " Channel lower connection " is ' Bolted ' -- see example .
