Connection Guide : Beam Seats
Disclaimer: This guide is not comprehensive. It shows only a few of the many beam seats that connection design can create. |

Plate Beam Seat | |
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Plate "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Plate ' seat material.
Comments: Connection design can create a seat for a W or C or HSS rectangular (tube) beam framing perpendicular to a wide flange or HSS rectangular column, but cannot design a beam seat for a beam framing to an HSS round (pipe) column. |
Sloping Plate Beam Seat
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Plate "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
|
|
Settings: ' Plate ' seat material.
Comments: Connection design can create plate seats on beams that slope up to 30 degrees from horizontal. |
Unstiffened Angle Beam Seat
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Angle "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Unstiffened L ' seat material, ' Welded ' to supporting member. Angles must be in the " Preferred Angle Sizes " setup list.
Comments: If connection design can't find a suitable angle in the setup list, it designs a plate seat instead of failing the connection. |
Stiffened Angle Beam Seat
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Angle "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Stiffened L ' seat, ' Welded ' to supporting. Angles must be in the " Preferred Angle Sizes " setup list.
Comments: If connection design can't find a suitable angle in the setup list, it designs a plate seat instead of failing the connection. |
User Defined: You can get 0, 2 or 3 rows of bolts on a User Defined angle seat (shown), plate seat or tee seat. Two rows are shown in this example. |
Bolted Angle Beam Seat | |
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Angle "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Stiffened L ' (shown) or ' Unstiffened L ' seat material. ' Bolted ' to supporting member.
Comments: Beam is non-sloping. |
W tee Beam Seat | |
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Tee "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Tee ' seat material. W tee sections must be in Home > Project Settings > Fabricator > Standard Fabricator Connections > Preferred WT Sizes .
Comments: If connection design can't find a suitable tee in the setup list, it designs a plate seat instead of failing the connection. |
Beam Seat with Restraining Angle
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Plate " " Web Stability Angle "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
Settings: ' Field bolted ' stability angles can be shop bolted to the ' Web ' (shown) or ' Flange ' (not shown).
Comments: Also see the setup field " Show field bolted stability angles ." |
Here's an example of a restraining angle on the top flange. The " Location " of the stability angle is set to ' On flange '. |
Beam Seat with Restraining Bent Plate on Beam Top Flange
Connection Design Locks = " Seated Plate "
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '
|
|
Settings: A ' Field bolted ' stability bent plate shop bolted to the ' Flange '
Comments: Connection design designs a restraining angle on the top flange (instead of a bent plate) if the beam is perpendicular to the column. |
Beam Seat to an Embed in a Concrete Wall
Connection Design Locks = N/A for the embed plate
Input connection type: ' Seated ' or ' Auto standard ' or ' User defined '.
Settings: An " Embed schedule entry " selects an embed plate, angle or channel from the Embed Schedule . " Embed plate location " sets whether the embed is in the wall or flat to the wall's surface.
Comments: The seat is a system connection . The embed plate is a custom member . The top of the embed is, by default, positioned 3 inches above the seat. You can change this " Support offset " on the Embed Plate window. |
