" Brace Connection To Gusset Hss Paddle With Web Plates " locks control the brace-to-gusset connection that is designed for an HSS, pipe or tube vertical brace to a beam & column when " Pipe/tube end-fitting " is set to ' Paddle (double shear) '. A paddle plate shop welds to the vertical brace. Web plates shop bolt to the paddle plate and field bolt to the gusset plate, which shop welds to the beam. " Notch top/bottom " under " End preparations " controls the notch in the brace for the paddle plate.

VIDEO " Pipe/tube end fitting " is set to ' Paddle (double shear) ' for a HSS rectangular (tube) brace to a column and base plate. (Recorded in SDS2 Detailing , v2016.)

Vertical Brace Edit: To change a setting, first set it to locked ( ). Related settings that are unlocked ( ) may be updated, and the " Left/Right end limit state " calculations will be updated. Settings that are locked ( ) will not be changed by connection design , even if doing so might prevent a connection failure.

Paddle plate ( dimensions )

Length ( pd len ): The length of either of the two edges of the paddle plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. Increasing the " Length " extends the plate toward the opposite end of the vertical brace. The length of the weld and the " Notch length " in the vertical brace main material are updated automatically. See the example .

Width: The distance between the two corners of the forward edge of the paddle plate. The width of the plate is perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. See example .

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the paddle plate. Since the thickness of the paddle plate is centered with respect to the work line of the vertical brace, increasing the " Thickness " adds material to both sides of the work line. The weld placement and " Notch width " in the vertical brace main material are updated automatically.

refx: The distance from the end of the paddle plate to the work point brace. See the example .

Refy: The distance from the work line of the vertical brace to the length edge of the paddle plate (the length edge is parallel with the work line). This distance is measured perpendicular with the work line of the vertical brace and in the same plane as the paddle plate. Changing the " Refy " slides the paddle plate sideways, perpendicular to the work line -- it does not move the holes in the plate since hole placement is set on the gusset plate. See the example .

Paddle plate to brace connection ( shop welded )

Weld size ( weld ): The weld size for shop welding the paddle plate to the edges of the slot in the HSS, pipe or tube vertical brace. The paddle plate shop bolts to the web plates, which field bolt to the gusset. See the example

Weld length ( not depicted ): A distance that is the length of the weld. By default, the " Weld length " runs the full length that the paddle plate is inserted into the notch in the HSS brace.

The eye button ( or ) for weld " Length " on the Edit Weld(s) window in Modeling sets whether or not a particular shop weld will have its weld length depicted on its weld symbol when that weld symbol is generated by Detail Members .

Web plates to paddle plate connection ( shop bolted )

Bolt diameter ( not depicted ): You can either type in a diameter (inches or mm), or you can select a bolt diameter from the combo box ( ). The diameters that are listed in the combo box come from Home > Project Settings > Job > Bolt Settings > the " Available bolts " list. The bolt diameter entered here, together with the " Hole type " entered below, set the diameter of holes in the web plates to paddle plate connection..

Hole type ( not depicted ): Standard round or Short slot or Oversized or Long slot or User slot #1 or User slot #2 . Together with the " Bolt diameter " entered above, this sets the diameter of holes for shop bolting the two web plates to the paddle plate.

Rows: The number of holes in any one column of holes in the web plates to gusset connection. Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. These holes are for shop bolting the web plates to the paddle plate. For the brace shown in the example above, the number of " Rows " is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole along brace ( to 1st hole ): The positive distance (parallel with the work line of the vertical brace) from the work point to the center of the nearest hole in the web plates to paddle plate connection (see example )

Hole spacing along brace ( sp ): Row spacing. This is the distance (center to center) between of any two adjacent holes in the same column of holes in the web plates to paddle plate connection (see example ). Bolt row spacing runs parallel with the work line of the vertical brace.

End connection failure message: Invalid bolt spacing

Edge distance along brace ( edge dist ): The distance from the forward edge of the paddle plate to the nearest row of holes in the paddle plate (see example ). The forward edge is the paddle plate width edge that is closest to the gusset plate.

Other edge distance along ( oed ): The distance from the interior edge of the near-side web plate to the nearest hole for shop bolting the near-side web plate to the paddle plate. This also applies to the far-side web plate. The interior edge of either web plate its width edge that is farthest from the work point. See the example .

Columns: The number of columns of holes in the paddle plate. These holes are for shop bolting the web plates to the paddle plate. Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. In the example above, the number of " Columns " in the web plates to paddle plate connection is ' 2 '.

Distance to 1st hole perpendicular to brace ( prp ): The distance from the work line of the vertical brace perpendicular to the nearest column of holes for shop bolting the web plates to the paddle plate. In the example above, this distance would be half the " Hole spacing perpendicular to brace " since the two columns of holes are centered around the work line of the brace.

Hole spacing perpendicular to brace ( column spacing ): The distance (center to center) between any two columns of holes in the web plates to paddle plate connection (see example ). Bolt column spacing runs perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace.

Horizontal edge distance ( h ): The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the length edge of the paddle plate to the nearest column of holes for shop bolting the web plates to the paddle plate. See the example .

Web plates

Length: The length of either of the two edges of the near-side web plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. This distance also applies to the far-side web plate.

Width: The width of either of the two edges of the near-side web plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. This distance also applies to the far-side web plate.

Refx: The distance from the forward edge of either web plate to the work point of the brace. This applies to both web plates. Tip: To get a properly designed connection, the " Minus dimension " ( " Setbacks " leaf, Vertical Brace Edit window) should be made equal to the distance you enter here. See the example .

Refy: The distance (perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace) from the work line to the length edge of the near-side web plate (see example ). This distance also applies to the far-side web plate.

Length ( not depicted ): The length of either of the two edges of either fill plate that are parallel with the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here applies to both the near side and far side fill plates.

Width ( not depicted ): The length of either of the two edges of either fill plate that are perpendicular to the work line of the vertical brace. The distance entered here applies to both the near side and far side fill plates.

Plate thickness ( not depicted ): The " Material thickness " of the near side fill plate. This also sets the thickness of the far side fill plate.
