Save Selection ( Modeling )

Tool summary :

  • Creates a selection file that lists the members or materials that you have selected in the model.
  • You give the selection file its name and can store it in any location you choose.
  • To select members or materials in the model using the selection file, Load Selection ... while in Modeling .
  • To select items on a selection dialog, press that dialog's " Load " button. You can load a selection file for members on any dialog that allows selection of multiple members. You can load a selection file for material on any dialog that allows selection of multiple materials. Loading a selection file can be done in dialogs opened in Modeling , Drawing Editor or Home .

  Step-by-step instructions :

The following instructions assume that you are in using a 3-button mouse. You can do step 1c (preselection) or step 3 (in-tool selection) to perform this operation.

1 . Before beginning, you should decide if you want to select members or material.

1a : In Modeling , Open ( Ctrl + o ) a view that shows the members or materials that you want to select.

1b (for materials) : If you want to select materials, you need to display all members which incorporate the desired materials in one of the three solids forms .

Select Items bindings (step 1c)

1c (optional) : In Select Items mode with an appropriate selection filter selected, use Select or Select + (or draw an area box ) to select one or more members, or you can select materials instead of members. Use Select- if you want to deselect items. You can also use the Model Tree to select members or materials. If you do not do this step, you will be prompted to select items in step 3 .

2 . Invoke Save Selection ... using any one (1) of the following methods:

Method 1 : Click the Save Selection icon, which is pictured above. The icon can be taken from the group named ' Selection ' and placed on a toolbar (classic) or the ribbon (lightning).

Method 2 : If " Modeling layout style " is ' Classic ', you can use the menu system to choose Edit > Save Selection .

Method 3, 4 or 5 : Save Selection can also be configured to be invoked using a keyboard shortcut , the context menu , or a mode . For the lightning interface, this configuration is done using Customize Interface .

3 . Skip this step if you already selected items in step 1c .

Select Item(s) bindings

3a (if you didn't preselect : The status line prompts you to " Select members or material ." Use Select Item(s) Mode options to Select and/or Select + one or more members or materials, or draw an area box , or use the Model Tree . Press the Enter key (or right-click and choose " OK " on the context menu ) when you are done selecting the items.

4 (if applicable) : If you selected a mixture of members and materials in step 1c or step 3 , you will get a dialog that prompts you to choose which class of selections you want to save.

Alternative 1 : Press " Members " if you want only those members that are in the selection you made in step 1c or step 3 to be included in the file. This saves the member piecemarks (e.g., B_12) and member numbers (e.g., [35]) of the selected members.

Alternative 2 : Press " Group Members " if you want only those members that are in the selection you made in step 1c or step 3 to be included in the file. This saves the member piecemarks (e.g., GM_94) and group member index numbers (e.g., [4]) of the selected group members.

Alternative 3 : Press " Material " if you want only those materials that are in the selection you made in step 1c or step 3 to be included in the file. This saves the submaterial marks (e.g., a1) of the selected materials.

Alternative 4 : Press " Cancel " to end this operation. Do not continue.

5 . A Save Selection dialog will open. The exact appearance and capabilities of that dialog will depend on the operating system you are using. Enter the name that you want and save it to a folder of your choosing.

Now that you have created a selection file: You can use the file to select members or ma terials in the model ( Load Selection ) or on a selection dialog (" Load ").
