Bolt Add ( Drawing Editor )

Tool summary :

  • Draws a bolt. Locate the same point twice to add a head or nut view. Locate different points to add a length view.
  • 3D bolts cannot be added using Bolt Add . See the warning!
  • Bolts are always plotted using drawing pen 1 (which appears as white in the Drawing Editor ). By default, drawing pen 1 plots a line that is black and 0.25 mm wide. A line color and line thickness for plotting is applied to each of the seven Drawing Editor drawing pens in Line Weights . When an object such as a 2D bolt is plotted, its pen number sets the object's plotted line thickness.

  Warning!

It is strongly recommended that you add bolts using 3D bolt options in Modeling (then auto detail ) rather than add 2D bolts in the Drawing Editor . Use 3D bolts for the following reasons:

  • 2D bolt options in the Drawing Editor are primarily drawing functions. They do not allow you to actually model bolts in 3D, as do the 3D bolt options in Modeling .
  • In Modeling , 3D bolts are input for all views. In the Drawing Editor , 2D bolts are input for only the drawing you are viewing.
  • The length of 3D bolts added in Modeling are automatically calculated to match the hole depth; for 2D bolts you have to determine the length yourself.

  To invoke Bolt Add (click here and here for more instructions) :

Method 1 : Click the Bolt Add icon. The icon can be taken from the group named ' Objects -- Bolts ' and placed on a toolbar (classic) or the ribbon (lightning).

Method 2 : If " Drawing Editor layout style " is ' Classic ', you can use the menu system to choose Objects > Bolts > Add .

Method 3, 4 or 5 : Bolt Add can also be invoked using a keyboard shortcut , the context menu , or a mode . For the ' Lightning ' layout style, configuration of the interface is done using Customize Interface .

Method 6 : While Bolt Mode mouse bindings are active, middle-click ( Add ).

  Adding a length view of a 2D bolt (also see adding a head/nut view ) :

Locating two points adds a length view of a 2D bolt in the Drawing Editor (see the warning ). The following instructions assume that you are using a 3-button mouse, that User and Site Options > General > " Point location target " is set to ' Fancy ' ( ), and that you use mouse bindings similar to those shown in these illustrations.

Before using this tool:

  • On the layer selection tool , select the layer that you want to add the 2D bolt to. This step is optional because you can select a layer on the Bolt Edit window.
  • Unshorten a drawing that has been shortened to ensure that the bolt will be drawn accurately. Also, unshortening is important if you want automatic detailing to later be able to correctly preserve ' User-created ' annotations when you Detail Members to update this drawing. For best accuracy in any type of Drawing Editor drawing, you can count on measurement tools such as Dimension Add or Ruler or Construction Line Add using BSCL to reliably produce precise and consistent results in an unshortened drawing.
  • To set the defaults for the to-be-added bolt(s) to be those of an existing 2D bolt, double-click the existing 2D bolt then press " OK " on the Bolt Edit window. This also affects the preview of the bolt that is shown in step 3.

1 . Invoke Bolt Add .
2 . Place the mouse pointer ( ) so the target ( ) snaps to point 1 of the bolt grip, then left-click ( Locate ).
3 . Left-click ( Locate ) point 2 of the bolt grip. INCL is the Locate option used in this example.
4 . On the Bolt Edit window, enter the settings that you want applied to the bolt.
5 . Bolt Add draws the bolt. Repeat this procedure, or middle-click ( Repeat ) to add a duplicate bolt, or right-click ( Return ) if you are done.

Note: Any 2D bolts added using this procedure can be instantly removed (one at a time, in reverse-order of their addition) by using Undo .

  Adding a head/nut view of a bolt (also see adding a length view ) :

Locating twice at exactly the same point adds a head or nut view of a 2D bolt in the Drawing Editor . The following instructions assume, that User and Site Options > General > " Point location target " is set to ' Fancy ' ( ), and that you use mouse bindings similar to those shown in these illustrations. Before beginning, see the introduction to adding a length view .

1 . Invoke Bolt Add .
2 . Left-click ( Locate ) twice with the target ( ) at the same point.
3 . On the Approximate Grip window, enter the approximate grip, then press " OK ."
4 . On the Bolt Edit window, enter the bolt settings, then press the " OK " button.
5 . The new bolt appears on screen. Bolt Add mouse bindings remain active.
6 . Middle-click ( Repeat ) to add duplicate bolts. Right-click ( Return ) when done.

  The Approximate Grip window (also see the above instructions ) :

Input the approximate grip: The distance (in the primary dimension " Units " or other units ) between the inside of the head of the bolt to the inside of the nut. This distance sets the length of the bolt, which may be changed on the Bolt Edit window.

"OK" closes the Approximate Grip window and continues with the Bolt Add operation. See step 4 in the above instructions.

"Cancel" closes the Approximate Grip window and ends the Bolt Add operation.
